The Hospice

About the Hospice

The Earl Mountbatten Hospice is the only hospice on the Isle of Wight and cares for over 800 patients with life-threatening conditions every year.  Our aim is to provide them with the best quality of life possible - medically, spiritually and holistically.

The hospice is the centre for palliative care on the Island and has an In-Patient Ward with 16 individual rooms, a Day-Care unit, Out-Patient unit, Hospice@Home team and a Family Counselling & Bereavement team. More details about the services the Hospice provides, including a photo tour, are on the main website http://www.iwhospice.org.

While most of the patients suffer from cancer with the increase capacity the Hospice also cares for an increasing number of patients suffering from other life-shortening conditions such as motor-neurone disaese, renal failure, congestive heart disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many patients can be coming to the Hospice for several years.

The service is entirely free to patients, at the time when they need it most. The standard of care is recognised as being very high, thanks to the high ratio of staff and volnteer carers per patient. However this comes at a cost.

It costs £3.5 million to provide this level of care to patients every year, and while we receive a grant of about a third from the PCT, it still leaves us fundraising £2 million.

This is done through a variety of means including retail shops, donations in memory, gifts in Wills, a weekly lottery and events such as Walk the Wight.

Walk the Wight is the biggest event we run and raises over 10% of the target, so it makes a huge difference to our ability to provide the care. If you would like to know more about Hospice Fundraising, the lottery or Volunteering visit www.iwhospice.org. For a list of current events
