SCHOOLS WALK THE WIGHT

In 2007 1329 school children from 51 schools joined in the Schools Walk the Wight and raised £21,477 towards te care of patients at the Hospice.

Schools Walk the Wight is a ‘virtual walk’ where the children build up the ‘miles’ by walking to school, walking around the playground or even out with their parents at the weekend. On registration, each child gets a Walker Number and Logcard with stickers to show how their ‘miles’ are building up. Then they are welcome to join the main Walk on 18th May to do the last 4 miles from Freshwater Bay to the Needles Park. Each child who completes the ‘Walk’ receives a Certificate and a Medal.

Each School has their own Walk the Wight coordinator who organises registrations. So if you are interested, get in touch with them in the first instance. Otherwise ring Hospice Fundraising on 01983 528989. Schools can register their interest from September 2008. Walkers numbers will be sent out in January and the ‘miles’ can be clocked up anytime between January and 17th May 2008. (If you have not received a Registration form from your school, Primary schools are doing the 26 mile Walk.

New in 2008 Secondary Schools are doing a 72 mile Walk.

New in 2008 High Schools are doing a Team Challenge on the day, which involves teams of 10 walking the whole Walk the Wight across the Island on 18th May. The fastest team wins the prize, but the time is judged on the time of the 10th team member getting to the finish line at the Needles.

For Primary and Secondary School children who want to join in the last 4 miles on the day, parents can leave their cars in a special carpark just before the Needles. From 9am onwards shuttle buses, courtesy of Southern Vectis, will take you to HF Holidays Hotel at Freshwater Bay which is the Start. Then when you walk over Tennyson Down to the Needles Park you will finish close to your car. Please let your school know if you plan to join the Walk before 30th April.
