Walk the Wight 2007 Review A Big Thank you from us

Thank you to the thousands of you who walked on Sunday in the wind and rain we are so proud of you.

877 walkers registered on the day and we had 4845 already signed up before the day so we must of had more than last year unfortunatly its hard to tell as we have some very soggy check point numbers handed in.

The first runner, Will Ambrosini, came in at just before 11 am, well done you looked as if you had just been on a stroll!!! he was shortly followed by thr first lady wearing boots, well done to both of you but dont get worried by this the rest of you, walking is fine by us, you all deserved your medals

We had 2 stilt walkers complete the walk in 8 hours 40 mins and Matt got as far as Mottistone before his rubber wore out on the bottom of his stilts, he walked the rest of the way. We are asking the guinness Book of Records to confirm they have created a record.

We had the youngest walker at 18 months walk the 4 miles from Freshwater, amazing

The chicken walked the whole way and the Morris Dancers danced the whole way.

We had 1329 children from 51 schools signed up for the schools walk the Wight

The children that walked on the day should wear their medals with pride you deserved them.

To all our sponsors, supporters and helpers a massive thank you from everyone at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice it meant a lot to us.

NEXT YEARS WALK IS SUNDAY 18TH MAY 2008

last year I walked the last four miles with my daughter(and we dragged my sister along aswell) as part of Bintead Primary school. We totally loved it and we are going to walk from Carisbrooke this year and make my son come with us also.

We did walk the wight this yeaR and did the last 14 miles, it was hard work as it rained most of the journy hehe. we got drenched

Well done everyone who completed it!

Molo and I took part in the last 14 miles……..it was very hard going…….everyone should be very proud of themselves for getting to the finish!

Hello, I posted the message below on the Solent TV web site after Dyke on his phone in on IoW Radio said the walkers do not need to receive a medal. I will add that if ever Dyke has any thing to do with running the Walk the Wight I will never take part again.

Well done to all who took part in the Walk the Wight on Sunday, including all who manned the water stalls etc. I walked along with my son & two of my grandchildren, but according to Alex Dyke I should not have been given a medal! What planet is this bloke on, of course we did not take part just to get a medal but to receive some sort of acknowledgement for the effort involved is the right way to finish the walk. If he had made the effort to face the wind & rain it would have been his choice to refuse the medal, but no he stayed home in the dry, then belittles all who walked & received the medal!”

I did from Bembridge to Alum Bay this year, and I would just like to say that I thought the whole thing was very well organised, with excellent support from the marshalls and the people at the stands. Thank you. Although I still am in a sorry state with my mucsles I am considering doing it again next year.

Next years application form will be in the post soon before you change your mind, thank you for walking

Having finally dried out after Sundays little stroll, I have just read Barry s comments about Mr Dyke, and i have to say I could n’t agree more. I did not Walk the Wight to get a medal I did it to raise money for the wonderful place where my sister died in February this year. However having a medal put round my neck after a very hard 9 hour slog made me feel very proud. I can look at my medal and be reminded of why we put on our walking shoes in the first place, and know that I’ve raised money for a very very good cause. My 4 year old daughter who completed her Walk the Wight, including the last four miles from Freshwater Bay has barely taken hers off. She keeps telling me she got a medal for Auntie Susan. I appreciate Alex Dyke likes to think he’s being controversial, but perhaps he ought to think a little more before he opens his mouth.
Enough said, well done to everyone great day and great atmosphere. My favourite moment of the day was seeing Alum Bay finally!! See you all next year!

A woneful achievement, from all of us here thank you

Thank you to all the supporters, officials and marshalls they couldn’t move and keep warm like we could. I really enjoyed the walk, haven’t done it for about 8 years, the start was so much better no hanging around. Well Done everyone.
I’m even managed to increase my sponsorship as everyone felt so sorry for us walkers!!!!

I know that this one was the most extreme weather we could have experienced, and unfortunatly my party decided to stop after reaching Carisbrook. Some form of shelter was needed where walkers could have got out of the worse of the weather while waiting for transport etc. That is not an adverse comment, the walk is a brilliant conception and long may it continue. See you next year. Brian Manser

Hi Brian
Thank you for walking and for getting as far as Carisbrooke. Unfortunatly we had been checking metcheck on a daily basis and didnt expect the weather to be as bad!!. The Priory was open for wet walkers armmed with towels and hot cups of tea unfortunatly not a lot of people saw the signs

My friend and I came over from Holland to walk from Carisbrooke. We had both said we would’nt walk if it rained, but after going out to the Hospice and seeing what a fantastic job is being done nothing could stop us. It was hard work, we were drenched and cold but it was worth it, and we will be back next year!

Thank you both for coming all that way and walking for us

Although I only walked 18 miles, I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely try for 26 next year. Many thanks to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice for the kindness they showed to my aunt, Mary Collins, who passed away there in February 2006.

I walked from Bembridge to Alum Bay for the 3rd year running. Definately the hardest so far what with all the wind and rain. Hats off to everybody who walked.

PS. I appreciated my medal at the end, thank you, even though Mr Dyke thinks they should not be given.

I’ve taken part in the walk for a number of years now and every year my walker number has got lower as I register earlier.
This year I was no.22 (appropriate really given the weather!) and its good fun while walking looking for people with lower numbers. Next year I would really like a single digit number, could this be arranged?
Yes I know its silly but then, fundraising aside, we do the walk for fun (don’t we?)
Well done to all concerned with the organisation and I hope you have dried out by now.

Hi Stuart, thank you for walking for us and sorry about the weather we are still ploughing through wet checkpoint slips! We do issue the numbers on a first come first served basis, however we do arrange special numbers for special people ie Lauren wore 13 as it was her 13th Birthday we gave 21 & 60 for two other birthdays. We normaly keep 1&2 for any famous walkers (we are still trying to find someone famous to walk) This year we gave number 1 to Frank Stevens who started the walk 17 years ago. Its a great idea but unfortunatly our poor hard worked volunteers couldnt cope with the demand. We also only issue the lower numbers to people walking from Bembridge the reason for this is so the DJ can see at Alum Bay from your number how far you had walked. Good luck for next year.

When do we sign up for next year?! We did the whole shebang from Bembridge to Alum Bay and loved it. In fairness, ‘Team P&P’ (well, me and my boyfriend plus anyone else we can rope in) might do some training next time. Still, we were pleased with ourselves, and we too were given extra money for the hospice from our sponsors due to the weather.

As for the medals debate - I didn’t even realise we got one until the end and I saw them being handed out, but I think it’s a great idea - I look forward to collecting more and raising more money for the hospice. Many thanks, Jackie, Northampton

Thank you Jackie and your team for coming all that way to walk in the rain for us you all deserve your medals. There is talk of sending out the application forms early for next year, haven’t told the volunteers yet so watch this space!!!!

Came down from London to walk from Bembridge to Alum bay with my grandad, who is 84 (was he the oldest?). It was our second walk and completely different from 2004 due to the weather. But everyone was cheerful and seeing my young son waving at the finish was fantastic.

Dear Chris thank you to you and grandad for walking for us. If you registered on the day we will not have had a record of grandads age and how far he walked. If you could email us the details on info@emhfunding.com we will look into it he does sound as if hes in with a chance. Well done to you both.

can you provide me with a map of the route from Bembridge to Alum Bay, please, or where can I get one. i would like to practise the walk with a friend between now and next year.
EMH Fundraising
Hi Joy
I afraid we dont have a map of the route as we do walk over some private land. if you would like to give us a ring on 528989 or call in to the Fundraising office at the Hospice we will gladly talk you through it.
